Bollywood glitz comes to Canada

OTTAWA - Toronto will shimmer and shake this weekend when Bollywood makes a splash in Canada's largest city, with some of India's film superstars gathering for an eagerly awaited awards ceremony.

The 12th Indian International Film Awards gets underway Thursday as it makes its North American premier in Toronto, and is holding a gala opening on Friday of Salman Khan's debut production "Chillar Party," a comedy about children of different backgrounds.

Bollywood gangster movie "Once Upon a Time in Mumbai" leads the field in the nominations for the Hindi-language film industry's glitziest awards, with Saturday's ceremony marking the culmination of the festival.

The film has been nominated in 12 categories for the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards, including best film and best male lead for Ajay Devgan, one of Bollywood's leading actors.

Screen tough guy Salman Khan's corrupt cop romp "Dabangg" (Fearless) is close behind with 11 nominations.

Other movies in the running for a clutch of awards include the drama "Ishqiya" (Love) with nine nominations. Romantic comedy "Band Baaja Baaraat" (The Wedding Planners) and the thriller "Rajneeti" (Politics) both have eight.

Launched in 2000 at the Millennium Dome in London, the annual IIFA awards have been held in 11 cities around the world, including Colombo, Macau, Bangkok, Dubai, Amsterdam and Johannesburg.

Tickets sold like hot cakes for this year's ceremony, snapped up within minutes of going on sale, said organizer Wizcraft International Entertainment.

Organizers say 22,000 are expected to attend the ceremony at Toronto's Rogers Centre, while another 700 million could watch it live on television.

Toronto, which has earned the nickname "Hollywood North" for its own bustling film industry, is now home to more than 500,000 Indo-Canadians.

And as some of the stars began to arrive on Tuesday, throngs of fans turned out to greet them at the airport.

"Them coming here was a big thing because it happens once in a lifetime," fan Palika Sharma told public broadcaster CBC.

Stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, Mallika Sherawat, Dia Mirza, Anil Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Neetu and Rishi Kapoor are all due to attend the festival.

The turnout will be a contrast to last year's event in Sri Lanka when many stars stayed away after protests by Indian Tamils.

The event is designed to celebrate the popular Hindi-language film industry and win new audiences abroad with cinema ticket sales slumping back home, falling 20 percent from $2.3 billion in 2008 to $1.85 billion in 2010, according to global consultancy KPMG.

Until recently, Indian filmmakers could be virtually assured of high box office returns, with cinema one of the few forms of entertainment and movie-goers traditionally loyal to big name stars.

But a combination of poor quality content, rising overheads, the global economic downturn and an increase in other ways for people to spend their spare time and hard-earned cash has hit studios in the pocket.

Bollywood icon Aamir Khan, who was in Toronto last year for the international premier of "Dhobi Ghat" (Mumbai Diaries), however, noted recognition abroad does not help with distribution in India.

Receiving an audience award at the Toronto film festival or the Palme d'Or at Cannes, for example, is a "sure, sure way of telling (Indian) audiences not to go to a film," he said.

Pakistani actress, Veena Malik, who made quite a stir with her alleged relationship with housemate Ashmit Patel in Big Boss is all set to debut in Bollywood with Daal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai to be directed by Aanand Balraj, the younger brother of Deepak Balraj (director of the movie Hafta Bandh). This will be Aanand’s directorial debut. Aanand started his career in Bollywood as an actor and was seen in various short roles in the Subhash Ghai films like Ram Lakhan, Khalnaayak, Saudgar and Pardes.

Reports have it that Veena will be playing a double role in the flick. One Veena was just too hot to handle on the smaller screen. Veena in double role will surely scorch the bigger screen!!

Sameera Reddy suffers an accident while shooting for ‘Tezz’Our space had informed you a few days back that dusky beauty Sameera Reddy is having a stint with bikes for her forthcoming action thriller ‘Tezz’. It so happened that when the actress was filming a stunt in the Perthshire forests, her bike skidded on a sharp turn and fell over. The bike was running at 60 kmph and Sam was dragged for at least 10 to 15 seconds before the bike could finally stop. Her right hand and shoulder suffered injuries.

Recalls Sameera, “There was a big truck with the crew catching the action from the front and the cinematographer on a bike with an ADV (digital incamera) riding alongside. A couple of cars were also following at top speed. I could have rammed into the truck, swerved and hit the cameraman or the guys from behind could have run me over. But God was watching out for me.”

“The action director who has choreographed stunts for Pierce Brosnan’s Bond adventures says my fast reflexes saved me. I’d trained for this for three months last year and not fallen once. This chase sequence was one of the last to be canned and no one had expected anything amiss. The near-fatal accident proves that when it’s action, you’re never too prepared for the worst,” she added.

Since she has completed most of her action sequences and has only a glamorous song left to shoot, director Priyadarshan has refused to let Sameera get onto her bike any more.

Ileana D’Cruz to portray shades of all ages in ‘Barfee’

Ileana D’Cruz, who carved her niche in South with superhit Pokkiri, is making her Bollywood debut with Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfee’. Ranbir Kapoor is playing the male lead and since his character is named Murphy who pronounces it as barfee because he is mute, the film has been titled so. Interestingly, Ileana will get to portray her talents well in the flick because she will be seen aging from a 19-year-old to a 65-year-old.

Basu divulges in further details saying, “All the three lead actors are playing out-of-the-box, and extremely interesting characters in Barfee.”

“Ranbir Kapoor, as everyone knows, is playing a deaf and mute boy, Priyanka Chopra is not mentally-challenged as reported, but is mildly autistic (a form of mental illness that causes a person to withdraw into a private world of fantasy and be unable to communicate with others or respond to his/her real environment) in the film. Ileana D’Cruz, on the other hand, is playing a character who will be seen aging from a 19-year-old to 30 to a 65 year-old,” he added.

The shooting for the flick has already started on June 14 at Darjeeling which happens to be Ranbir’s hometown.

Baddie Sanjay Dutt goes bald for his forthcoming ‘Agneepath’

Sanjay Dutt sports a bald look for his forthcoming ‘Agneepath’ and uptil now the actor was using a prosthetic makeup for his looks. However, while shooting for the flick in Diu, the actor faced a serious problem of his makeup melting down in the searing 48 degrees heat of Diu.

This turned out to be a serious problem as the prosthetic makeup actually takes nearly three hours to apply and at least one and a half hour to get it removed. In fact, Sanjay had to wake up at 5 am to get his makeup ready for the shoot at 9 30 am. Also, the heavy prosthetic makeup was causing a strain on his eyes.

As a solution to this problem, Sanjay finally decided to shave off his head for this movie and use wigs for the other movies he was shooting for. He has hired the renowned wig maker of Hollywood, Victoria Wood, to design a perfect wig for him for his other films.

Dutt says, “I couldn’t have handled the make-up mess after a point. It was too tiring. Also, it was a strain on my eyes as prosthetic make-up is heavy.”

Imran Khan stands up against the raised age bar for alcohol consumption

The Maharashtra Government recently raised the age bar for the purchase and drinking of alcohol from 21 years to 25 years and actor Imran Khan has taken an initiative to stand up against this decision of the Government.

Imran has said he would file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the court because he feels that it is unconstitutional for the government to bar a person’s freedom of choice despite being an adult.

“I will go to court. I will launch Facebook campaign on Power to You. I met a lot of people and heard a lot of discussion but no one does anything. It is a problem with this country,” he said.

“If the government things that you are an adult at 21, then they should allow you all the rights of an adult,” he added.

“I would request the entire country to support me. I want the people of this state and the nation to be with me. It [government move] is dangerous, personal freedom is being limited. “Ultimately where will it stop?” he asked.

Senior actor Amitabh Bachchan also seems to support Imran in his view as posting on his Twitter account, he said, “Also, on drinking age limit increase to 25 ! Err .. old and mature enough to vote for the country, or join army and fight for the nation … but not old and mature enough to be told when you are allowed to drink ???? Strange ?!!!!”

“Karisma has always been a very hard-working and capable actress. But in terms of challenges posed to her performing abilities, I feel there have been not too many golden opportunities. I feel this is the right time for Karisma to do ‘Dangerous Ishq’. It takes her to a new level as an actor,” he added.

Salman Khan set to skip IIFA this year

New Delhi: All those who were expecting a face-off between the two Khans of Bollywood - Salman and Shah Rukh - at the forthcoming International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend will be disappointed as Salman has decided to skip the award ceremony.

In New Delhi to promote his debut movie production Chillar Party, Salman confirmed that he won't be present at the three-day event which will kick off on Thursday in Toronto.

"I am shooting for my next Bodyguard and it is an action movie, so yes, you people won't see me there. IIFA will miss me this time," Salman told reporters at the Film Division on Tuesday.

This year, Shah Rukh is performing on the IIFA stage after seven years. The actor has attended two editions of the IIFA Weekend in the past - in Singapore in 2004, and Amsterdam in 2005.

As Chillar Party will open the 12th IIFA awards ceremony and this being Salman's first production, his presence was more than expected. But it seems the rift between the two Khans has pushed Salman to stay away from the ceremony.

Shahrukh Khan

Shahrukh Khan was born on the 2nd Nov. in the year 1965. He started as an actor in Television serials and later graduated to full fledged movies. One cannot slot him as a Movie actor now as he dons several hats, including Film producer and television anchor. Shahrukh Khan made his debut on television with the serial Fauji and followed it up with Circus. Both were very succesful and Shahrukh Khan or SRK as he is known now became a famous TV star. Shahrukh Khan ten made the transition to the big screen and debuted with the movie Deewana in the year 1992. That movie was successful and ensured he was taken seriously as a major star in Bollywood. He has won thirteen Filmfare Awards, seven of which are in the Best Actor category; Baazigar, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Anjaam, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge amongst others. Shahrukh Khan is married to Gauri Khan nee Chibba and has two children – Aryan and Suhana and is based in Mumbai. Besides movies Shahrukh Khan runs a Film production venture called "Dreamz Unlimited" with close friend and co-star Juhi Chawla and director/ friend Aziz Mirza.
